The Spliced Gene Malaria Vaccination was hailed as a miracle of science and genetic engineering at its finest. An aggressive worldwide campaign eradicated the killer virus saving a million people annually from its murderous reign. But by 2150 extinction of Homo sapiens suddenly loomed when the gene began to wreak havoc with adolescents born of that generation.
Armed with a new strategy, the Science Ship Linus Pauling, commanded by Captain Thomas Jackson and outfitted with a crew of fifteen humans and a Draconian, embarked on a mission to find naturally occurring, living DNA molecules with opposing chirality to human DNA. Two years into their mission, they find what they have been looking for twenty five light years from Earth, but at the cost of their ship and perhaps even their lives. The fourth planet of the star Beta Hydri offers the prize but also exhorts a price: starvation. The miracle world that evolved the contradictory chiral amino acids, the building blocks of living things, also evolved the contradictory chiral saccharides, the food for those same living things.
Captain Thomas Jackson holds his shipwrecked crew together as they struggle with survival. Reaching out to a thriving humanoid population gives them tools to survive but also new problems to contend with. Rescue is still years away, if ever. Natural phenomenon is blamed on the new comers and xenophobia erupts growing more violent with every disaster. Jackson must not only find a way to get the DNA back to Earth, but protect his crew and new family from not only geological forces beyond his control, but biological ones as well.
