Crocheting lilac hoops as a way of distancing herself from lemon cream biscuits, Gloria learns her best friend Gwen has died, that morning, during her swimming lesson. From that moment on life changes rapidly for the almost sixty-year-old Gloria, who almost immediately discovers her husband, Roger, had maintained a thirty-year love affair with Gwen, producing a spoilt, malicious daughter, Gwen-too.

Faced with a shattered pre-assumed destiny, Gloria leaves Roger and her affluent existence to take up refuge in the rustic West Coast fishing village of Kreef Bay. It is here that she finally comes of age, albeit while comfort eating endless chunks of fresh, white bread, spread thick with butter and jam. Sharing her rations with Rufus, a local Ridgeback who decides to take her under his wing, Gloria gradually comes to term with her future, learning that life is much more than she had ever anticipated, while acknowledging destiny is not always as clear-cut as it seems.
