Running through the Miami airport to catch my flight to LA, I realized that I was late on purpose. Subliminally, I was trying to hold on to my life on the east coast. Leaving the sunshine of south Florida for the frigid temperatures and isolation in Whitefish Montana was the last thing I wanted to do. I heard my name called from the overhead speakers.
Merci Roper, last boarding call to LAX, Merci Roper.
I was on my way to where I needed to be. Escape from the west my goal and I fulfilled it going to college in Boston and law school in Florida. I passed the Bar and had a good job practicing family law at Morgan Gutierrez (MG). At 29, I was the youngest associate at the firm with dreams to someday become partner or spin off my own firm. Then, the wheels came off my perfect life when my twin sister died in a tragic accident. Brie landed headfirst on the ground after being thrown off her horse. Her spine was severed and she suffered severe brain damage. I flew west immediately to be by her side as she was on life support. My parents and her husband had disparate ideas about what to do regarding life support and she left no living will. Heels were dug in for a lengthy court battle but Brie slipped away before things could get nasty. Now it was the debate for custody of two young children and my folks asked for help. Ed and Nan Roper were going up against Max Brewer, the biological father.
