Matilda is finally getting out of bone (and mind) numbing Minnesota. Her magic carpet is a scholarship to a small, southern, all-girls college. Her dreams: 1. Being warm. 2. Getting away from her mother. And 3. Meeting a true southern belle—the girl of her dreams.
The first two prove easy. Scholarships flood her mailbox, and Glen Mawr College for Young Women in Georgia is at the top of her list.
But her third is more elusive. Oh, Tillie spotted her dream belle at orientation, the beautiful, popular, and oh-so-lush, Lily Beauchamp. But how will a skinny, brainiac, wall-flower meet Lily, fairest of them all?
The answer is, Linear Functions. Desperate to boost her average in calculus, Lily seeks out Tillie and they begin a friendship. When Lily’s boyfriend dumps her during Thanksgiving break for putting on a few extra pounds, Tillie steps in with comforting pizza, and a boney, tattooed shoulder to cry on.
As the months pass Tillie encourages her southern belle to indulge in her desires and Lily’s boundaries spread along with her waistline. Tillie begins to believe she might just be loveable as well as smart. But will this mismatched equation prove true? And if not, will Tillie survive the lessons of love?
