Innocence Lost by Kylie Scott
It was January and even though it was summer there was an unusually cool breeze blowing along the beach. Katie sat with her toes buried deep in the sand. As cold as it was this time of the morning the damp sand felt soothing. Sitting alone and feeling alone she stared out to the waves comparing the inconsistent, out of control sequence of the waves to her life. The crashing water building up, pushing towards the shore then disappearing onto the sand with no trace that it ever existed.

‘Just like the ocean’ she thought, ‘my life is so out of control’.

Katie Byrnes was a beautiful girl. She looked so young and innocent sitting on the beach in her light pink woollen jumper and cream scarf. Her golden brown hair was pulled back in two pigtails, but a few strands had fallen free and were blowing in the wind. Katie had just turned 16. She had lived in Pearlside for almost five years now and she had grown up so much since then. Katie often wondered if her life would have been better if she had never moved to Pearlside at all. Although it was a beautiful town surrounded by luscious mountains and fronting onto a peaceful beach, Katie had experienced too much for a girl her age. The beautiful town that surrounded her did not protect her from life's cruel blows.

Tears started to fall as she placed her hands on her stomach.
‘What will I do?’ she asked herself, ‘How am I going to tell him I’m having a baby?’
