The assignment managed to creep into his brain, behind the kisses and sensation of velvet skin, disturbing his pleasant reverie. Yet another vampire raising havoc amongst civilized folk. He reckoned he’d never been in South Carolina before and wondered why this particular deader had nested there. Charleston. An old city, he knew from his study of history, full of wealth from tobacco and rice. Civil war stuff, too. A seaport, probably. How had the vampire gotten there? How had the monks, in all their meticulous tracking, missed him?
