Paul ran toward the bus and cursed as it sped off without him. He tried waving his briefcase to catch the driver's attention, but it hadn't worked. People were staring out the window at him, and he knew what they were thinking, because he had thought the same thing several times before.
“I should have told the driver to wait,”
“That poor bastard,”
“Haha, did you see the way he ran?”
Zeke threw the basketball and watched in anticipation as it circled around the rim. He cringed when it plopped off the net and bounced off into the grass. So much for that, he thought as his shoulders slumped in discouragement.
He heard a deep laugh come from behind him and jumped, turning around quickly to see its source. He had thought he was alone as he played basketball in the park nearest to his house, but apparently he wasn't.
Patrick Laramy sat down the newspaper, thrilled. His favorite theater was going to be hosting a black and white movie marathon next week. All of his favorite classics were showing, and even some he hadn't heard of. It was going to be the event of the season!
Or it would be, if he had any friends who were interested in that sort of thing. Most of his friends were girls who felt safe around him and liked having the novelty of the token gay friend. And no offense to them, but they probably couldn't tell Charlie Chaplin from Adolf Hitler. They were sweet, but again, the novelty was their connection, not their intellect.
Po ran through the hot sand toward the pyramids, wondering to himself if he was ever going to be able to work up the courage to talk to the woman he had been infatuated with since he was a young boy. Her name was Ray, and she was the most extraordinary beauty that Egypt had ever seen. The other boys had crowded around her as if she were royalty, and he had always been too meek and shy to treat her with the same bold affection that the other boys had.
The leaves were blowing gently in the wind as Mila walked slowly toward home from the village. Papa had been waiting for a long time for news of what was happening with the war, and she was finally blessed with just what he had been wanting to know about. Although she knew his face would fall when he heard such news. The Germans were taking over everything, and even their own village might soon feel the wrath before they knew it. She was worried they would have to flee, but she didn’t think it would be too big of a deal. Danger was a strange concept, and she had no idea how real it could be.
Nina Simmons wandered absently around the grocery store, looking at all the food that was stacked up on the rows and rows of shelves. It seemed disconcerting that food should be so easy for her to access while in different parts of the world, food was scarce and people were starving. She sighed in dismay and walked outside to discover herself short of breath and panicked by the thought of other people in so much misery. She knelt over, holding onto her knees, and looked over at the ice cream shop across the street.
