Liddy Tipple is an elite within a city of elites. She is a well-educated, attractive, wealthy 23-year-old whose friends are all well-educated, attractive and wealthy 20-some-year-olds. Her father owns the most popular bar in the city, which is named for its best-selling drink: Happiness - a drink that promises to give its drinker happiness without any drawbacks or negative consequences.

Liddy and her friends divide their time between her dad's bar, Liddy's house, and the city of Fairview's most exclusive athletic club. Their lives seem perfect, but there are problems lurking beneath the surface. Liddy's mother has some vague illness and is just a bit "off." News of rampant and unexplained deaths in the country falls on deaf ears of the people in the city. And a handsome stranger from the country who supplies Happiness to Liddy's father's bar shows her that all in Fairview might not be as good, or as perfect, as it appears. Liddy's eyes are - through the stranger and some catastrophic events - opened, the blissful blindness of her youth is lifted, and, for the first time in her life, she is able to see - and embrace - true happiness.
