Darkness Descending

When the rich and powerful passengers of the luxury space cruiser Silver Queen suddenly turn into a drug-crazed mob, David Damion has only his skills as a Knight of Avalon to help him survive:

The men stopped and turned towards him. Damion summed them up quickly – middle aged passengers, overweight, out of condition, and high on something that made their eyes bright and slightly unfocussed. He considered his options. Drugged opponents could be unpredictable, as likely to charge as flee. Taking a firmer grip on his weapon, he took a couple of steps towards them to see how they would react.

Struggling single-handedly to protect two naive young aliens, he is relieved to team up with Nova McLaren, unpredictable heroine of the Martian War:

Standing boldly between him and the mob was a flame-haired Amazon, armed with a blaster in one hand and a disrupter in the other. She was side on to him, but he could see enough of her face to realise she was a beauty. A beauty even through her snarling expression as she swore at the threatening crowd.

It soon becomes clear the chaos aboard the Silver Queen is merely a symptom of a wider plot, a plot fabricated by the sinister Grey Dawn cult to bring down the Planetary Union itself:

“ There’s nothing Grey Dawn would like more than to destroy the Union. If the Planetary Union was to collapse, Grey Dawn would take advantage of the anarchy to impose its own distorted form of rule on any society weak enough to succumb.”

Their first priority is to escape the hijacked spaceship and flee to safety, but the cultists are determined to stop them and there is nowhere to hide. Before long, the quartet find themselves running from both Grey Dawn assassins and the forces of law. Can they unmask the cult’s shadowy leader and destroy the plot before their luck runs out or the Union crumbles?

The Characters

David, Lord Damion Native of the human colony Avalon, a society based upon Arthurian legend and the code of chivalry, Damion has been trained from his youth in the ways of knighthood. More used to defending the weak and helpless from tyranny and exploitation, the Silver Queen affair throws him on the defensive and casts him in the unfamiliar role of quarry. Can he ignore the disturbing lure of Nova McLaren and focus on saving himself and his companions from death?

Nova McLaren Daughter of the human President of Mars and the Martian High Priestess, Nova is a hybrid that science says cannot exist. Her childhood shattered by seeing her mother brutally murdered in front of her, Nova’s demons force her to take chances others would avoid. As a child soldier in the Martian trenches and a teenage pilot in the Martian Space Corps, she has become a legend, but the fight against Grey Dawn threatens to be her last.

Princess Qabar Nurek Suleka A child of Attar’s ruling dynasty, Suleka is damned by her gender in a society that values women only as sex objects and breeding stock. Educated by her reformer father, she strains against the confines of the royal seraglio that is her home. When the small triumph of being allowed to travel on the Silver Queen turns into a nightmare, she must quickly learn to apply her lively intelligence to the problem of staying alive and realise that freedom has its price.

Ral Jarvin The youngest child and only son of Tira Jarvin, First Minister of the matriarchal planet Haradia, Ral struggles to find a meaningful definition of manhood to aspire to.
