Excerpt

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a neighbor boy in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a playdate.

At least, that was the truth acknowledged in the Bennet household, and Longbourn may as well have stood as a universe unto itself. The governing principle of this universe was Mrs. Bennet: a stout woman of indeterminate age, who often acted as the most juvenile voice amidst her decidedly immature brood.

"Elizabeth, put your bonnet on! No, not that one, the one with the pretty primroses!" Mrs. Bennet clucked to rival the chickens that scattered in the courtyard in the wake of her family's hasty footsteps. The tiny brunette beside her clamped her hands down upon her head to keep her conservative choice of headwear firmly planted there.
