A young man, Lewis Grantley, discovers to his surprise that his benevolent benefactor has willed his entire fortune to him. He visits the village where his benefactor was from, only to discover that the town has decided that the heir could only be a liar and swindler. In the face of such prejudice, he changes his name temporarily in hopes of befriending the townspeople. He also hopes to somehow make right any wrongs. Will he win their love and respect? Or will all his plans backfire?

He meets semi-aristocratic people plus interesting Scottish country folks in the story with some Scottish phrases and pronunciations sprinkled here and there throughout the book. (The author herself was Scottish)

There is a ghost in the story, but it does not play a major part. This is a sweet romance with no vulgar language or bedroom scenes. It is a three-volume series published together as one book.
