Tyler Harriman is young, cynical, and has a strained relationship with his mother, who is a recovering addict. One night, he is coerced into going to a bar with his best friend Darrin. Relegated to a corner in the bar, Tyler is having a miserable time until he meets Austin Steiner, a strapping writer who lives in the city. Tyler and Austin immediately connect despite their ten year age difference.
Over time, Tyler's sneering outlook and his burning desire to leave his home town with Austin's more established and mature views on life. A suicide attempt by Tyler's mom at first brings Austin and Tyler closer to one another, but has the residual effect of threatening their relationship as Tyler begrudgingly has the responsibility to care for his mom and and wants Austin to have no part of his home life.
