Bump In The Night Series – The Broken Promise #3

***This 18,000 word paranormal short story features sexual encounters with a shifter, knotting and tying, dubcon themes, and a very fertile protagonist. This unique story is set during the same timeframe as the kidnapping from Aubrey’s novella, “Teasing the Wolf—The Complete Series,” and reveals Regent’s desires from Annie’s perspective.***

Annie hasn’t forgiven Hunter for his uncontrolled passion, but her body’s betrayal is far worse.

Stricken with a fevered heat, Annie’s instinct desperately desires her mate, but she successfully denies Hunter and protects her fertile womb from his intentions. The only way to free herself from Hunter is to break his heart, but the wolf refuses to give up on his mate.

Not even a full year can mend her shattered trust, but Annie knows it’s far too dangerous to be without her mate. A rival wolf pack stalks her from the shadows, and their lust is more frightening than Hunter’s obsession. The enemy wolves kidnap Annie and offer her to their alpha—a wolf who threatens to take the fertility that rightfully belongs to Hunter.

For the first time, Annie realizes her true feelings for her mate, but it might be too late to tell him.

He glanced back to my car. “You know, I’d say a fix like that deserves a reward.”

I swallowed. “A reward.”

“For rescuing you. Job well done and all.”

My insides fluttered and popped, like an over-risen cake collapsing in a jostled oven. Hunter edged closer to me, his sweet, chili scent enveloping me in a cradle of security of overwhelmingly masculine power. He didn’t need to hold me any closer. Just his closeness—an intimacy I rarely offered him—stirred every last instinct my body possessed. He wanted a reward. I wanted to give him one.

“I think I deserve a kiss.”

Hunter loomed over me, dropping his head low and his lips temptingly close to mine. I stilled. I hadn’t kissed him in weeks. Months even. That was the benefit of mounting. When Hunter overwhelmed me with passion, I couldn’t see his face, touch his cheek, or accept his kiss. What we did was animalistic and primal, something he took because the wolf wouldn’t permit my defiance.

But a kiss? A kiss was simple. Light. Loving.

His lips brushed mine, and my bones ground to dust. The passionate, feral demands of Hunter replaced with a gentleness my body craved. It was sweeter than any sugar, more satisfying than any cream, and warmer than any molten caramel. I stilled as Hunter’s arm wrapped over my waist. He pulled me closer, flicking his tongue over mine. I accidentally groaned against him.

This was how it was supposed to be with my mate. Tender and loving and absolutely story-book. A kind romance of patience and understanding. Gentle kisses and timid pecks.

But Hunter wasn’t that man. He had never been than man. And I couldn’t expect him ever to become that man.

Hunter was wolf. He didn’t understand gentle. He wanted one thing and one thing only.

My submission.

His arms tightened over me, and I broke the kiss as he bent down to sweep me into his arms. Hunter didn’t stop. I awkwardly flailed away, batting at him as he struggled to guide me back into his embrace. The motion dizzied me more than it should, and I panted as I sidestepped. Hunter’s eyes darkened—the shade of lust that so often conquered me despite my best intentions. He wanted me. I clenched my teeth through the shudder. I had to escape or else the rest of my day would be spent on my knees surrendering to my mate’s desire.

I didn’t want that.

Or did I?

Christ, I didn’t even know anymore.
