After her village is attacked by a band of raiders, Megan finds herself a captive. Fortunately for her, she is mistaken for a boy, and is subsequently able to escape.

Now alone in the woods, she runs into a group of hunters, and among them is a man named Thomas. Being a man of honor, Thomas decides that he must protect Megan, even from her own foolish actions, and she soon feels the sting of his firm hand on her bottom when she puts herself in danger.
Thomas and his comrades bring Megan to their home at a manor known as Everglade, where her identity is finally revealed to all. She is treated kindly, but the peace of the manor is soon shattered by a series of assassination attempts. When suspicion falls on her, Megan must try to prove her innocence, while at the same time she wonders if the crimes are indeed connected to her in some way.

In the meantime, Megan learns that Thomas will not put up with her defiant attitude. She finds out the hard way that disobedience means a trip over his knee, with her bottom bare if he deems it necessary.
