Chronicles of the Republic, an alternate history, is the story of two brothers, Johannes and Mattæus Kirkagaard, who come of age in a time of great social and political upheaval. Terra, the world they inhabit, is an Earth very much like our own, with the same continents, oceans, mountains and valleys, with civilizations and cultures familiar to us, but one in which history unfolded very differently. This is the story of their hopes, fears, and struggles. It is also a story of their loves, their friendships, and of solidarity.

Book I: Strike Action follows seventeen year old fraternal twins Johannes and Mattæus Kirkagaard through the events of October 19-22, 2072, four days which foreshadow entirely the events that will shape the following decade and their adult lives: Societal unrest, political dissolution, and civil war.

Increasingly a loner, Mattæus believes his friendship with Shane mac Cormac had withered and died the year before when Shane's father was killed in an accident. But Shane, having finally come to grips with his loss, is eager to reach out again to Mattæus. Meanwhile, football star and top-grade student Johannes has seen his friendship with teammate Lukas Grundtvigsson evolve into something more, a passionate and barely concealed love affair. The problem is Eadmund Kirkagaard, the boys' father, doesn't approve of either Shane or Lukas. In fact, Eadmund has a particular disliking for Lukas, whose father is a labor delegate and active in the strike which has brought production to a halt in the shipyards of Niew Lifrapol.

When martial law is declared in the capital to resolve the strike there, the proconsul orders and end to all strikes, including the one in Niew Lifrapol, and calls out the state militia to enforce his edict. Lukas, fearing for his father's safety, persuades the brothers that night to accompany him to the shipyards.
