Ghoul (Zoë Martinique .1) by Phaedra Weldon
"Ghoul" is the short story inspiration for the creation of the Revenant, Jason Lawrence, who has become a vital player in the Zoë Martinique Investigation books.

Jason Lawrence died over seventy years ago, the day he invited the demon Mephistopheles into his body. And from that day he's lived as one of the First Born, a Revenant. A vampire. Revenants can only be made by taking in a demon (First Born) into their body and surrendering a part of their souls to be forever bound to the blood of humans.

Rene refuses to believe Jason isn't able to give her immortality, so when her own plans to steal it render her little more than a monster, her revenge is swift and unforeseen.

Rene's revenge is carried forth in the novellas:

• Native Soil: Part One
• Native Soil: Part Two

All three installments can be found in the full novel Native Soil.
