Paula Quinn
Hi Paula, many thanks for doing the Q&A. Your new novel 'The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor' has been recently released. It is set in medieval Scotland. What is it in particular that draws you to write about medieval times? Paula Quinn: I’ve always been drawn to the past. Like my characters, I grew up on books about King Arthur and his knights. I remember when I was maybe nine or ten, there was an eight part documentary of King Henry the Eighth. I sat through it, in my glory, loving the images before me on the T.V. . My parents thought I was odd but period gowns and hairdos made my young muse happy. In terms of writing stories set in that time period, how do you approach writing strong heroines that still do not feel out of place in a society in which women were hardly allowed to lead? Paula Quinn: There were plenty of strong female leaders in history. Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Isabella of France, and every Pictish queen. I think the key to writing a strong heroine is that she shouldn’t care about fitting it or not. That’s first. My heroines are true to themselves and who they want to be and if society doesn’t like it, society will just have to change.. Of course, there’s a balance between strong and independent, and an impetuous fool who doesn’t care what consequences her actions have caused. She needs to be built with conviction and maturity. Of all the books you have written, do you have a favourite couple? Paula Quinn: I want to say yes, I do have a favorite, but then I think of the rest of them and I want to say no. If I had to pick one, and it’s hard, I’d have to say Callum and Kate from Laird of the Mist. Getting passed the monster that Callum MacGregor believed he was, and finding the man under all that bluster was satisfying and rewarding for me. I couldn’t have written anyone else for him but Kate. Aside from medieval times and highlands, what are other romance book tropes you enjoy reading about? Paula Quinn: I love paranormal romance. If it’s historical paranormal romance, even better. If I had more time to read, I also love Science Fiction/ Fantasy. And what are your favourite highland romance books by other authors? Any recommendations? Paula Quinn: Some of my favorites are: Sue Ellen Welfonder, Monica McCarty, Karen Hawkins, Lynsay Sands, and Margaret Mallory just to name a few.
